Program Curriculum


The M.S. in Organizational and Human Resource Development program is a 36-hour program comprised of ten courses. You may add a non-credit one-week residency to earn ACU's Graduate Certificate in Conflict Resolution.



The following courses are required for graduation from the program:

Principles and Practice of Negotiation and Mediation
Comprehensive study of the conceptual and interpersonal skills required to engage in effective negotiation and to serve as a mediator. Emphasis on development of interest-based negotiation and mediation skills with strategies assisting parties in the creation of opportunities for agreement.

Managing Conflict in the Workplace
Provides students with opportunities to develop skills in identifying the signs and root causes of friction, anger, violence and conflict in the work environment.

Conflict Theory and Communication
Designed to prepare professionals for the field of conflict resolution. Provides advanced opportunities to analyze case studies, critique basic assumptions of conflict theories, and role-play appropriate behavior in conflict scenarios.

Conflict Management Systems Design
Provides a framework for understanding organizational conflict prevention and resolution systems. Analysis of case studies and practical application featured throughout the course.

Organizational Behavior
Presents individual, group and organizational variables that inhibit or facilitate effective organizational functioning.

Intercultural Communication
Stresses understanding of contrasting cultures and ways of communicating with individuals and groups from around the world as well as subcultures within the United States.

Human Resources Management
Development, organization and functions of human resource management.

Human Resources Training and Development
The theory and skills involved in doing human resource training in organizations. Provides knowledge, skills and experience in developing, presenting and evaluating training programs.

Teams and Team Leadership
Analysis of the factors contributing to success of teams in complex organizations, focusing on team selection, development, training and evaluation. Students will develop skills through team-building and leading in simulations and team projects.

Seminar in Persuasion and Social Change
Processes, theories and strategies by which group, organizational and cultural persuasion occurs by emphasizing diffusion of innovation strategies.

Supervised Practicum

A supervised experience in an appropriate organizational setting designed to integrate professional experience with theory learned throughout the OHRD curriculum.

Capstone
The Capstone is the culminating academic event for all Master of Science in Organizational & Human Resource Development students. To meet the comprehensive requirements of the program, students participate in the Capstone during the last semester of their degree. The Capstone is designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their scholarship developed throughout their academic program and demonstrate mastery of the program learning outcomes through an exhibition. The Capstone is assessed on a Pass, Pass with Revisions or Fail basis.

Residency Session
For students who wish to complete a Certificate in Conflict Resolution. This residency session is a non-credit participatory activity required for successful completion of the Certificate in Conflict Resolution. An entry indicating satisfactory attendance and participation will be made on the student's transcript. Such entry will be an element of the transcript audit pending the award of the certificate.
